Lesson 02

Why diets work

Diets can produce real results. Understanding why helps us separate what matters from the rules, claims and branding surrounding them.

Start with what diets get right.

Diets can work. People can lose weight, improve markers of health and feel better while following them. Pretending otherwise would ignore both the evidence and many people's genuine experience.

The confusion begins when the result is used as proof that a particular diet has discovered the one correct way to eat. Low carbohydrate plans, fasting, calorie counting and tightly controlled meal plans can look very different, yet they often work through the same underlying mechanism.

Their rules change what, when or how much someone eats. This commonly reduces overall energy intake. When the body receives less energy than it uses over time, it has to draw on stored energy and body weight can fall.

The common mechanism

Diets do not need to share the same rules to produce the same result. If their rules consistently reduce energy intake, they can lead to weight loss.

How the rules create change

A diet rarely changes only one thing. Its rules can alter several parts of someone's eating at once, which is one reason the named diet can appear more powerful or unique than it really is.

01

It adds structure

Clear rules reduce decisions and make eating feel more organised and deliberate.

02

It narrows the options

Removing foods, meals or eating occasions often reduces intake without saying so directly.

03

It creates feedback

Early progress can strengthen motivation and make the rules easier to keep following.

None of this means food quality, appetite, biology or circumstance do not matter. They influence how easy the diet is to follow and how someone responds to it. The point is simpler: a result does not prove that every explanation or rule attached to the diet was responsible for producing it. Tomorrow, we will look at the other half of the picture: why an approach that works for a while can still be difficult to maintain.

Take a minute

What changed when it worked?

Think about a diet or eating plan that produced some progress for you. What did its rules change about the way you ate?

02
Take this with you

Diets work when their rules change what you repeatedly do, not because their branding is special.
