The True Meaning of Consequences
The word consequences often carries a negative tone. We hear phrases like “facing the consequences” and immediately think of punishment or failure.
But at its core, the word is neutral – it simply means the results or outcomes of something.
Root Meaning
Con- → with, together
Sequi → to follow
Together, consequi means “to follow with.”
That’s all consequences are: the things that follow from your actions or choices.
Consequences in Action
At Thrive, we’ve seen this play out firsthand.
Many members have lost significant amounts of weight, increased thier strength, and dramatically improved their health. These changes didn’t happen overnight, and there was no secret method – they are the consequences of showing up week after week and putting in consistent effort.
On the other hand, the negative health outcomes many people struggle with – low energy, chronic aches and pains, preventable conditions – are also consequences. They’re the natural results of neglecting our health and wellbeing over time.
Consequences aren’t inherently bad; they’re simply what follows.
Your habits are the strongest predictors of your future outcomes. Small, daily actions stack up into powerful results over time – they compound, for better or for worse.
So ask yourself:
What will be the consequences of my actions?
Am I building habits that lead me toward the outcomes I want?
Because whether positive or negative – the consequences will follow.
