Lesson 01

What counts as nutritional success?

Before deciding what needs to change, we need a better way of deciding whether that change is actually working.

Success needs a better definition.

First Things First introduced an idea that will run throughout this course: lasting nutritional change is built through behaviour, not information alone. That means success cannot be judged only by the outcome. We must also consider the behaviours being created, what maintaining them demands from you and whether the approach can continue within your real life.

Nutrition is often judged by a single outcome: the number on the scales. That can matter, but it cannot tell us whether the approach behind it is improving your life or whether you can realistically keep it going.

A strict plan can produce a short-term result. That does not automatically make it successful. If following it requires you to ignore hunger, avoid ordinary social situations or repeatedly fall into an all-or-nothing cycle, the result comes with a cost.

Equally, progress does not become meaningless because one meal was unplanned or one week was difficult. An approach should be judged by the pattern it helps you create, not by whether every decision was perfect.

Our working definition

Nutritional success means building an approach to food that supports your health, works within the realities of your life and can be maintained without constantly having to start again.

Three questions matter

Throughout this course, we will look beyond whether something can work in theory. We will ask whether it works for you, in your actual life, and whether it helps you build something you can continue.

01

Does it support your health?

It should move the outcomes that matter to you in a positive direction.

02

Does it work in your life?

It has to survive busy days, imperfect weeks and ordinary social situations.

03

Can you keep returning to it?

Success is built through repeatable actions, not brief periods of perfection.

This changes the question from “How perfectly can I follow this?” to “What is this approach helping me build?” That distinction will matter as we begin to examine why diets can produce results, why those results are often difficult to maintain and why eating cannot be separated from the rest of your life.

Take a minute

What would success improve?

If better nutrition was genuinely working for you, what would become better in your day-to-day life?

Take this with you

A successful approach should improve your life, not require you to put your life on hold.
